Well he has almost the same chances of dying as the others but he is still alive, so you can be happy if you like him xD (btw,Isayama said in an interview that Jean is his fav. character).

I see it too sometimes. This mangas fairly old so I guess it was a style back then? I'm sure the magaka has gotten better over time unless he intentionally draws them like that.
